Business days: endpoints and overlapping holidays change the count
Monday 2026-10-05 through Friday 2026-10-09 has five working days with Saturday–Sunday weekends and both endpoints included. Excluding Wednesday 2026-10-07 leaves four. Listing that holiday twice or also listing Saturday 2026-10-10 does not remove another working day.
Worked comparison
The calendar-date metric counts only dates included by your endpoint switches. For October 5–9 with both endpoints included, it is 5. Subtract 0 weekend dates, then the one entered holiday on a remaining weekday: 5 − 0 − 1 = 4 working days. The holiday metric is not the number of input lines; weekends are removed first and each remaining holiday date is removed once.
This table scrolls horizontally on small screens.
| Include start / end | Entered holidays | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Yes / Yes | None | 5 |
| No / Yes | None | 4 |
| Yes / No | None | 4 |
| No / No | None | 3 |
| Yes / Yes | 2026-10-07 | 4 |
| Yes / Yes | 2026-10-07 twice; 2026-10-10 | 4 |
A mistake to avoid
“Five weekdays minus two holiday entries equals three” is wrong when both entries name the same date. A weekend holiday or a holiday outside the range also causes no additional subtraction. Adding working days is a separate operation: 2026-10-02 + 1 working day is 2026-10-05, or 2026-10-06 if October 5 is entered as a holiday.
Apply it to your calculation
- Choose a working-day count within a range, or the date reached by adding/subtracting working days. For a calendar-date gap or month change, use the Date Calculator.
- Select your actual weekend pattern and enter applicable holiday dates in YYYY-MM-DD form.
- For a range, record both endpoint choices with the calendar, weekend and holiday counts. Copy or print the calculation receipt so someone else can read the same assumptions.

No national holiday calendar is supplied automatically. Invalid holiday dates are errors; duplicate valid dates count once. This result is your calendar model, not a legal filing deadline, delivery promise or an organization’s official calendar.
