How this calculator works
Enter your hourly rate and the regular and overtime hours for one pay period. Choose a 1.5× or 2× preset, or enter a multiplier of at least 1. Add a second tier when some overtime hours use another rate. Regular pay is regular hours × hourly rate. Overtime base pay covers the base hourly rate for both overtime tiers; the premium is only the extra amount above that base. Total overtime pay is base plus premium, and gross pay adds regular pay. Optional projections repeat this same period using 52 weekly, 26 biweekly, 12 monthly or 1 annual periods. They do not use the working-weeks setting from the salary converter or deduct taxes.
Example
At 20 per hour, 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours at 1.5× produce regular pay of 800, overtime base pay of 100 and an overtime premium of 50. Total overtime pay is 150 and gross pay is 950. Adding 2 hours at 2× adds 80 and raises gross pay to 1,030. If 950 is one weekly period, repeating it for 52 weeks projects 49,400 annually and about 4,116.67 per month.
Formulas and common pay examples
Formula
Gross pay = regular hours × base hourly rate + tier 1 hours × base hourly rate × tier 1 multiplier + tier 2 hours × base hourly rate × tier 2 multiplier. Overtime premium is the overtime pay above the base pay for those hours.
Time and a half and double time examples
These examples use an hourly rate of USD 20 and 40 regular hours, with no second tier. All amounts are before taxes and deductions. The listed hours are overtime hours, not total worked hours.
- Multiplier 1.5× · Overtime hours 0: Total overtime pay USD 0 · Gross pay USD 800

- Multiplier 1.5× · Overtime hours 15: Total overtime pay USD 450 · Gross pay USD 1,250
- Multiplier 2× · Overtime hours 0: Total overtime pay USD 0 · Gross pay USD 800
- Multiplier 2× · Overtime hours 5: Total overtime pay USD 200 · Gross pay USD 1,000
- Multiplier 2× · Overtime hours 10: Total overtime pay USD 400 · Gross pay USD 1,200
- Multiplier 2× · Overtime hours 15: Total overtime pay USD 600 · Gross pay USD 1,400
How can I read gross pay without adding the premium twice?
At USD 20/hour, 40 regular hours pay USD 800 and five overtime hours at 1.5× pay USD 150. Read the same USD 950 gross either as 800 + 150 or as 900 base pay for all 45 hours + 50 premium. Another two hours at 2× add USD 80, including USD 40 premium, bringing 47 hours to USD 1,030.
This table scrolls horizontally on small screens.
| Hours × rate (USD/hour) / sum | Pay multiplier | Gross amount (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| 40 × 20 | 1 | USD 800 |
| 5 × 20 | 1.5 | USD 150 |
| 2 × 20 | 2 | USD 80 |
| 800 + 150 + 80 | — | USD 1,030 |
A mistake to avoid
Enter each hour in only one tier. The USD 50 premium is already inside USD 150; adding it again would give the wrong USD 1,000. Review regular pay, overtime total and gross together before copying or printing. Period projections repeat the entered pattern.

Frequently asked questions
What is time and a half?
A 1.5× multiplier pays the base hourly rate plus a 50% premium for each entered overtime hour. At a base rate of 20, the overtime rate is 30; 5 hours earn 150, of which 50 is the premium.
What is double time?
A 2× multiplier pays twice the base hourly rate. At a base rate of 20, 2 overtime hours at double time earn 80: base pay of 40 plus a premium of 40.
Is overtime calculated before taxes?
Yes. Regular pay, overtime pay, projections and gross pay are before taxes and deductions. The effective hourly rate is gross pay divided by all entered regular and overtime hours; it is zero when total hours are zero.
Can I use two overtime rates?
Yes. Enable the second tier and enter its hours and multiplier separately. The result shows each tier’s hours, hourly rate and pay, as well as combined overtime base pay, premium and total. Enter each hour in one tier only.
How are monthly and annual projections calculated?
Choose the period covered by your entered hours and enable projections. Gross pay is multiplied by 52 for a weekly pattern, 26 for a biweekly pattern, 12 for a monthly pattern or 1 for an annual input. The annual amount is divided by 12, 26 and 52 for comparable periods. A monthly equivalent is an annual average, not four weeks of pay.
Does this calculator apply local labor law automatically?
No. You supply the regular hours, overtime hours and multipliers. The tool does not decide which hours legally qualify for overtime or infer your employer’s rules. Use Work Hours for one shift, Time Card to total weekly records and Salary to Hourly to compare pay units.
